A. Curriculum Design and Development Process

Curriculum Design and Development is an integral part of The Educational Design and Program offerings at Yanbu Industrial College. This is based primarily on a Needs Analysis survey or a feasibility and desirability study conducted usually among the college stakeholders before the development of curriculum begins. The aim is to find out what industry, the community and potential students want in terms of skills and knowledge.

CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT PROCESS

The curriculum development process consists of three broad stages:

  1. Course syllabus development
  2. Course content development, and
  3. Word processing and printing

Course syllabus development:
  1. Course Description: Involves writing a statement that expresses what is to be taught in the course.
  2. Course Objectives: Course objectives are derived from the catalog description, and they list the competencies the student will acquire upon completion of the course.
  3. Course Outline: Course outlines are derived from the course objectives, which are broken down into modules that make up the course. The number of modules depends on the number of course objectives. A module is a package of specific information designed to help the student achieve the required competencies. Each module is given a time frame within which it should be completed.
  4. Course Outcomes: These are derived from course outline. They are the responses expected to be demonstrated by the student upon completion of the course.

Course content development:
The course content is developed after the syllabus is approved. The course developer searches and reads appropriate literature and then isolates the information. Afterwards he interprets, simplifies and writes up the material to a level that can be readily understood by the student. However, for the baccalaureate degree courses the developer searches for appropriate text books and these books are requisitioned, purchased and distributed to the students. For the Bachelor's degree program, only syllabi are developed for each course. Text books are then matched with the syllabi.

We conduct surveys to ascertain the extent to which the curriculum objectives and outcomes are achieved and the suggestions from surveys are used as the basis for making or not making changes.

Student and stakeholder inputs are available from student, alumni and employer surveys.
