ELC COURSES  

Technical Track


ENG 001: This is the first course for students who are going to study technical subjects and is an integral part of the Preparatory Year Program.  It has three core areas: reading, writing and technical English.  Twenty hours of classroom tuition are provided and this is supplemented and extended with e-learning.

ENG 002: This course builds on the skills developed in ENG 001 and its learning outcomes are based on the same core elements.  Twenty hours of classroom tuition are provided and this is supplemented and extended with e-learning.

ENG 101: English Communication I. This is a communication skills course which focuses on developing the necessary functional abilities needed to participate actively in a variety of learning and industrial situations.  Students learn how to make an oral presentation and actively participate in meetings, seminars and discussions.

ENG 102: English Communication II.  This is a communication skills course which emphasizes the development of the expository writing skills required by students in order to produce an extended piece of writing.  Students learn the skills of planning, outlining, organising their ideas, applying cohesive elements, editing and proof reading.

ENG 201: Technical Report Writing. This is a writing course which provides students with an opportunity to apply their writing skills to a variety of authentic academic and industrial themes.  It provides valuable practice to prepare students for the extended writing assignments they have to complete in their areas of specialization.  Skills developed on this course will also enable students to write effective reports once they enter the workforce.

ENG 301: Academic Writing I. This is an academic writing course which develops the skills needed for students to produce the written assignments required for their various degree programs.  Students learn to acknowledge sources and incorporate bibliographies, glossaries, indexes and tables of content into their writing.

ENG 302: Academic Writing II.  This is an advanced level academic writing course which enables students to write dissertations and long reports.  Research skills are developed and practice is given in writing a variety of different kinds of essay.

Business Track

ENG 011:  This is the first course for students who are going to study business and industrial management subjects and is an integral part of the Preparatory Year Program.  It has three core areas: reading, writing and business English.  Twenty hours of classroom tuition are provided and this is supplemented and extended with e-learning.

ENG 012:  This course builds on the skills developed in ENG 011 and its learning outcomes are based on the same core elements.  Twenty hours of classroom tuition are provided and this is supplemented and extended with e-learning.

ENG 111:  Business Communication I.  This is a business communication skills course which focuses on developing the necessary functional abilities needed to participate actively in a variety of learning and industrial situations.  Students learn how to make an oral presentation and actively participate in meetings, negotiations, social situations and using the telephone.

ENG 112:  Business Communication II.  This is a business communication skills course which emphasizes the development of business writing skills.  Students learn to produce a variety of business documents while acquiring essential discourse skills that cam be applied to academic and business writing tasks.

ENG 211:  Business Report Writing.  This course builds on previously acquired writing skills and provides practice in producing a variety of relevant writing tasks.  It encourages analytical thinking and the effective organization of ideas to achieve a number of functions business writing concepts.

ENG 311:  Advanced Business Writing I.  This course prepares students to complete the academic essays and extended pieces of writing that they have to produce to succeed in the field of industrial management. 

ENG 312:  Advanced Business Writing II.  This is an advanced level academic writing course which enables students to write dissertations and long reports on management related topics.  Research skills are developed and practice is given in writing a variety of different kinds of essay.
